Pecanceled Flights Set Right

Thanksgiving travel was nuts in 2021 - American Pecans provided a taste of home to get travelers through it.

We know better than anyone how important it is for loved ones to gather and have quality turkey (and pecan) time – whether it’s pecan-inspired side dishes or delicious pecan pie, our pecans are part of Americans’ favorite Thanksgiving meals and moments.

But with holiday travel anticipated to surge in 2021, and flight delays in headlines every week, American Pecans was there to ease the stress related to delays and cancellations with our ‘Pecanceled’ Flights Set Right campaign. We helped Americans in a couple delicious ways:

  • Partnered with Farmer’s Fridge in select major airports coast-to-coast to offer free, limited-edition pecan pie snack bites to anyone whose flight was delayed or canceled. ​
  • Launched a Pie in the Sky Sweepstakes where one unlucky traveler, who has to miss their Thanksgiving as the result of a ‘pecanceled’ flight, was our lucky winner and receive the ultimate travel package.

Pecanceled Flights Set Right FAQs

What was the goal of the campaign?

Americans – many of whom missed gathering for the holidays in 2020 – were eager to make it home for Thanksgiving, and it was expected that the busiest week of the year at airports would be even busier in 2021, with many delays and cancelations.

We wanted to provide a taste of Thanksgiving for travelers frustrated with flight delays and cancelations. We worked to generate widespread positive awareness by providing a delicious pecan snack to fuel stressed travelers, and keeping Thanksgiving’s favorite nut top of mind.

What elements did the marketing campaign include?

American Pecans partnered with Farmer’s Fridge to offer anyone whose flight gets delayed or pecanceled free, limited-edition pecan pie bites.

These pecan treats, which were a tasty and satisfying snack to help “fuel” passengers through the travel season, were located in 31 Farmer’s Fridge vending machines throughout 8 major airports coast-during Thanksgiving week in 2021.

To further rectify any interrupted Thanksgiving travel plans, we also launched our Pie in the Sky Sweepstakes. One unlucky traveler who missed their Thanksgiving as the result of a ‘pecanceled’ flight received the ultimate holiday travel package – roundtrip, First Class air travel for the next five years to their Thanksgiving destination (within the continental U.S.), a travel accessory package, a Thanksgiving meal delivered to their door, and a years’ worth of American Pecans.

Key media contacts and social media influencers received promotional packages filled with pecan-themed travel necessities, like a phone charger, neck pillow, eye mask, and of course fresh pecans and Farmer’s Fridge pecan pie bites.

We also conducted a Thanksgiving survey with food and travel trends to gather stats that were compelling for media. American Pecans also worked with influencers who helped promote our campaign to their engaged followers.
